The Dwarven settlements
Enri had seemed quiet at first. Friendly, but quiet. But once Dante and Lauren got him talking about technology and the advances his clan had been making, it was as though a dam had broken open. The Dwarf, who had seemed old somehow, all of a sudden seemed a lot younger. Excitement and passion for his work radiated from him. Peta couldnât help but think that Enri would have gotten along really well with her brother Nicolai. Who knew? If the Dwarves and Fenrir could actually make this friendship work, a friendship between the two men would be possible, if not likely. Nick would probably even be willing to leave the den to meet the Brokerian Dwarves. It might be one of the few things that would encourage him to leave the comfort of his safe, technology-dominated world.
âYou need to meet our brother Nicolai.â Dante said suddenly, as though heâd plucked the thoughts straight from Petaâs head.
Enri smiled. âHe likes technology?â he asked.
âOh, you have no idea.â Peta said with a laugh, âThe two of you would get on like a house on fire.â
âOh.â Enri put a finger to his ear, pausing mid-stride and putting a finger up in the air to halt their walking and talking. âHold on a moment. I need to take this.â He said.
The six of them watched as Enri nodded along. âOkay. Weâre nearly there. Just keep them on the line for a bit and Iâll patch them through.â
âIs everything okay?â Neil asked.
Enri nodded. âWe have an advanced communications system set up inside our boundaries. It means we can intercept any nearby calls. Apparently, your den has been trying to get in contact with you.â He said, âThe calls havenât come through to you because we were preventing it, at least until we knew you werenât here to hurt our people.â
Neil shrugged, not worried in the slightest. âMakes sense.â
âSomeone from your den picked up on the fact that we were jamming the calls and forced their way through our blocking system. When they still couldnât connect with your phones they managed to contact us directly.â Enri said, a little bit of awe slipping into his tone.
âThat would be Nick.â Peta said.
Enri looked between Peta and Dante. âYouâre right. I think I would like your brother. Anyone who can break through all our firewalls and patch directly into our calling channels, not to mention accessing our cameras and sending through live video of himself is alright by me.â He said.
âFinally!â Nicolai exclaimed when they came into camera view, âI was starting to think the Dwarves were lying and you were being held prisoner or something. I was just about to hack into their security cameras.â
âWeâre way too stealthy for them to take us prisoner.â Dante said bobbing up and down into random âninjaâ poses.
Nick rolled his eyes. âYou mean like how you taught Peta to be âstealthyâ so she could slip out of the den, meanwhile, I was having to set up distractions so she would actually get out without being seen?â
âYou helped me get out of the den? Wait.
